Alfred Marshall was only 17 years old when he was arrested and sent to jail for a crime he did not commit. He was galvanized by the experience and since then has worked on housing campaigns, warrant clinics, and contributed to the Ban The Box initiative that eliminated an employer’s ability to legally ask an applicant about their criminal history on job applications. He serves as chapter organizer of VOTE or Voice of the Experienced, a grassroots nonprofit organization with chapters in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Lafayette that has fought since 2004 to restore the human and civil rights of those most affected by the “criminal (in)justice” system in Louisiana, including protesting in support of Calvin Duncan, the duly-elected Clerk of Criminal District Court whose position was eliminated by state Republicans in May 2026 to prevent him from taking office.
