Multidisciplinary artist and abolitionist jackie sumell was inspired nearly 25 years ago by incarcerated activists and Black Panther Party members Robert King, Herman Wallace, and Albert Woodfox, otherwise known as the Angola 3. Following the passing of Wallace, sumell opened Solitary Gardens in 2015. The gardens reflect the principles of prison abolition, permaculture, and community power to facilitate exchanges between people in solitary confinement and volunteers on the “outside.” A reflection of a ten year journey in becoming an abolitionist, the 10-year anniversary of gardens, and sumell’s vision for the culmination of over two decades’ worth of activism—a nonprofit called Freedom To Grow.
